Key Largo is the diving capital of the world and the gateway to the Florida Keys, the first island you reach as you drive south onto the Overseas Highway. Its real treasures lie just offshore, where the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States draws snorkelers and scuba divers from around the globe.At its heart is John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which opened in 1963 as America's first undersea park and protects roughly 70 nautical square miles of vibrant reef. Beneath the surface, the iconic Christ of the Abyss, a nine-foot bronze statue submerged in about 25 feet of water, has become one of the most photographed underwater monuments in the world, while dive sites like Molasses Reef and Grecian Rocks teem with hundreds of species of fish and coral. Glass-bottom boat tours, kayaking and easy water access make the reef accessible even to non-divers.Mellow and tropical, Key Largo is where the Keys adventure begins.
