Stop 41 is a numbered waypoint within the Everglades, where the route passes through habitat that supports some of the park's more elusive residents. The American crocodile — a saltwater-tolerant species — ranges through coastal areas of the Everglades, while alligators dominate the freshwater interior where stops like this are typically situated. This distinction between the two crocodilians is one of the Everglades' unique features: it is the only place in the world where both species coexist naturally. Stops along the freshwater routes give the best chance of seeing alligators at close range in their natural habitat.
